Diffused Reality investigates the evolving boundary between the photographed image, the digitally constructed image, and the expanded experience of animation and augmented reality. Rooted in my own camera-based source material, each work is combined and art directed through generative AI, then manually resolved through digital post-production. This process transforms observation into a fluid, layered visual language that extends beyond the still frame. With many pieces activated through a phone to reveal motion and added dimensionality beyond the print surface, the series merges photographic authorship, constructed imagery, and immersive technology into a singular form. Presented as limited-edition prints, Diffused Reality invites viewers to consider photography not as a fixed document, but as a living, mutable experience.

Dan @ Adobe MAX

I had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Russell Preston Brown and his apprentices at Adobe MAX 2025, leading a pre-conference session that focused on the fusion of AI-generated animation and augmented reality, showing how static designs can evolve into dynamic, interactive storytelling experiences. Participants learned hands-on techniques to bring their AI-enhanced visuals to life using Zappar-powered AR, bridging the worlds of photography, illustration, and motion into a new realm of immersive expression.

Dan @ AiPAD Photography Show

At the 2025 AIPAD Photography Show, Dan Marcolina presented Diffused Reality, new work that blends traditional photography with AI-driven transformations. Through a unique process combining original photographs, manual digital techniques, and artificial intelligence, Marcolina crafts hybrid images that challenge and expand the boundaries of visual storytelling. Many pieces are enhanced with augmented reality, inviting viewers to engage with the artwork in immersive and interactive ways.

Below is a range of recent and ongoing work which reinvents my original camera-based imagery into heightened visual and narrative forms. Through digital construction and animation, I try to enhance each image beyond the original, often stretching its storyline toward new and more resonant meanings. Although the work takes on many different visual expressions, it is tied together by a consistent sensibility: a muted, off-center beauty where elegance, tension, and transformation quietly coexist.

“Marcolina has always fused tradition and innovation into his image creation work, his new show brings film, Photoshop, mobile, and AI to life through AR like only Dan can.”

Catherine Jansen Professor Emeritus

Marcolina's exhibit demonstrates both technical mastery and a visionary approach to how technology can expand the language of photography. He is truly a Master. Like no other work I have ever seen.

Alex Novak, Publisher, E-Photo Newsletter and President, Contemporary Works/Vintage Works

Tom Shillea, Fine Art Photographer & Director

“This rare chance to see 45 years of photography evolve—film, digital, mobile, AI, and AR—comes alive through interactive imagery and AR layers. Marcolina’s lecture adds a vital behind-the-scenes perspective.”

gary saretzky, archivist, photographer, and educator

“Dan Marcolina’s retrospective traces his evolution from straight photography to magical realism. His recent innovative work expands the parameters of visual art as Gabriel García Márquez did for literature”

Walter Plotnick Artist, Educator & Collector of Obscure Vintage Photographs

“Marcolina’s stunning expansive exhibition is a brilliant blend of still photographs and motion storytelling. His inventive vision gives viewers a delightful surprise with each image. His skillful use of modern software and traditional photography is a thrilling visual experience”

The Legacy Show

My Legacy Show celebrated the ongoing conversation between photography and technology. Rather than a look back, it revealed how each new tool - from film to mobile to AI - opens fresh ways to tell visual stories. Through layered imagery and augmented reality, the work invited viewers to experience the evolution of seeing itself, how curiosity, not technology, has always been the true driving force behind my art.
